Begininngs. Mtskheta Tour
From Tbilisi, actual capital of Georgia, you go to the historical heart of the country, its first capital and the most ancient town – Mtskheta. You will visit Svetitskhoveli cathedral, constructed in 11th century on the place of the first Christian church of Georgia. Next stop is Samtavro monastery from where the road goes deep to river Mtkvary valley. You will be able to see old fortresses watching over the valley and finally you will come to Shio Mghvime Monastery founded in 560 by saint Shio.
The tour to Mtskheta will start at your hotel or any location in Tbilisi. First you will visit Jvari (Cross) Monastery a sixth century Georgian Orthodox monastery. Jvari Monastery is listed as a World Heritage site by UNESCO. After Jvari Monastery you will enter Mtskheta, after stopping at parking you will pass through old towns narrow streets and come to Svetitskhoveli Cathedral the second largest church building in the country, it is listed also as an UNESCO World Heritage Site. Second site in Mtskheta will be Samtavro Monastery 11th century. Next site Fortress Bebris Tsikhe. After Mtskheta, the last location will be the Shio Mgvime Monastery 6th century complex.
